Croatia is rich in medieval castles which are scattered throughout the country, from the ruins of fortifications dating from the early Middle Ages to late medieval castle-fortifications. This is an opportunity for young archaeologists, and all lovers of archaeological discoveries, to participate in discovering the secrets of the old town of Novigrad that lies above the magical Dobra River on the old Karolina Road which used to connect Karlovac with Bakar and Rijeka in the 18th century. According to current findings, the castle was built in the early 16th century by Duke Bernardin Frankopan; and on one of his many trips, Emperor Joseph II visited Novigrad in 1783. Each day, you will actively participate in the excavations at the site of the old fairy-tale castle of Frankopan, led by the supervising archaeologist of the Archaeological Museum of Zagreb; you will also have the opportunity to visit several other Frankopan castles in the areas of Karlovac and Vinodol, and get acquainted with the wonderful cultural and natural heritage of Croatia.
