The Roman conquest of Pannonia started in the 30’s BC, and the resources of the Roman archaeological findings throughout Croatia are an invaluable treasure waiting to be discovered and experienced by curious travelers. On this journey, you will get to know and experience the archaeological sites located near Zagreb. Andautonia, also called “Roman Zagreb” (1st to 4th centuries) just 12 km away from today’s capital was, in Roman times, an important port on the Sava River and is now an archaeological park, the first of its kind in Croatia. Siscia, today called Sisak, used to be a military camp and then the capital of the province of Pannonia Savia, and had thermal waters, a port on the Kupa River and a mint. Heading north, we will come to the well-maintained complex of Roman civil architecture “Aquae Iasae”, which still delights every visitor with its beauty. With the archaeologists who will be your hosts at each of the sites, you will be able to find out everything about the archaeological findings and experience the spirit of Old Rome – taste Roman specialties, try out old crafts and be entertained by games just like the ancient Romans. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to have a walk around Zagreb, Varaždin, Sisak and Turopolje, and find out about the cultural heritage and customs of central Croatia.
